Browsers don't work, but there is internet. Why does the Internet not work on a computer via a LAN cable? Check your connection settings to your provider

This instruction contains step-by-step information on what to do if the Internet does not work on a computer with Windows 10, 8 and Windows 7 in various scenarios: the Internet disappeared and stopped connecting for no reason via the provider’s cable or via a router, the Internet only stopped working in the browser or certain programs, works on the old one, but does not work on the new computer and in other situations.

Note: In my experience, about 5 percent of the time (and that's not a small number) the reason the Internet suddenly stops working is with the message "Not connected. There are no connections available" in the notification area and "Network cable is not connected" in the list of connections indicates that the LAN cable is really not connected: check and reconnect (even if visually it seems that there are no problems) the cable both on the side of the computer's network card connector, and from the LAN connector on the router, if the connection is made through it.

If the first option does not suit your situation, then I recommend following these steps to check your Internet connection:

Let's stop at point 6 - the local network connection shows that everything is fine (on, there is a network name), but there is no Internet (this may be accompanied by the message “No access to the Internet” and a yellow exclamation mark next to the connection icon in the notification area) .

LAN connection is active, but there is no Internet (no Internet access)

In a situation where the cable connection works, but there is no Internet, there are several common causes of the problem:

  1. If the connection is made through a router: there is something wrong with the cable in the WAN (Internet) port on the router. Check all cable connections.
  2. Also, for the situation with the router: the Internet connection settings on the router have gone wrong, check (see). Even if the settings are correct, check the connection status in the router’s web interface (if it’s not active, then for some reason the connection cannot be established, perhaps the 3rd point is to blame).
  3. Temporary lack of Internet access on the part of the provider - this does not happen often, but it does happen. In this case, the Internet will not be available on other devices via the same network (check if possible), the problem is usually fixed within a day.
  4. Problems with network connection settings (DNS access, proxy server settings, TCP/IP settings). Solutions for this case are described in the article mentioned above and in a separate material.

For the 4th point of those actions that you can try first:

If these two methods do not help, try more sophisticated methods of solving the problem from the separate instructions given above in paragraph 4.

Note: if you have just installed a router, connected it to your computer with a cable, and there is no Internet on the computer, then most likely you simply have not configured your router correctly yet. Once this is done, the Internet should appear.

Computer network card drivers and disabling LAN in BIOS

If the problem with the Internet appeared after reinstalling Windows 10, 8 or Windows 7, or in cases where the local network connection is not listed in the list of network connections, the problem is most likely caused by the fact that the necessary network card drivers are not installed. Less often - because the Ethernet adapter is disabled in the BIOS (UEFI) of the computer.

In this case, you should follow these steps:

Perhaps in this context it will be useful: (if there are unknown devices in the list in the task manager).

Network card parameters in BIOS (UEFI)

Sometimes it may turn out that the network adapter is disabled in the BIOS. In this case, you definitely won’t see network cards in the device manager, and local network connections in the list of connections.

The parameters of the computer's built-in network card can be located in different sections of the BIOS; the task is to find and enable it (set to Enabled). This might help: (also relevant for other systems).

Typical BIOS sections where the required item may be located:

  • Advanced - Hardware
  • Integrated Peripherals
  • On-board device configuration

If the adapter is disabled in one of these or similar sections of the LAN (may be called Ethernet, NIC), try turning it on, saving the settings and restarting the computer.

Additional Information

If by now you have been able to figure out why the Internet is not working, as well as making it work, the following information may be useful:

  • In Windows, Control Panel - Troubleshooting has a tool to automatically fix Internet connection problems. If it does not fix the situation, but provides a description of the problem, try searching the Internet for the text of the problem. One of the common cases: .
  • If you have Windows 10, look at the following two materials, they may work: , .
  • If you have a new computer or motherboard, and your ISP restricts Internet access by MAC address, you should tell them the new MAC address.

I hope that one of the options for solving the problem with the Internet on a computer via cable was suitable for your case. If not, describe the situation in the comments, I will try to help.

Quite often it happens that for the time being everything seemed to be fine with the connection, but at one “wonderful” moment suddenly access to the World Wide Web disappears. It is very difficult to immediately say why the Internet does not work. There could be many reasons for this. Now we will try to find out what these reasons are and how to fix the problems that arise.

Why doesn't the Internet work on my computer?

First of all, you need to pay attention to some factors that affect your network connection. No matter how trivial it may sound, one of the reasons may be a simple cable breakdown (if a direct connection is used). Often there are incorrectly specified settings, situations with incorrectly installed drivers, and even failure of the network card.

Why doesn't the Internet work on a tablet, phone or laptop that has built-in Wi-Fi modules for wireless communication? This usually only has to do with settings. In some cases, when not Wi-Fi, but a mobile network is used for access, the reason may be the corresponding parameters of the selected network, or the problem may lie in the work of the operator itself. But first things first.

Pre-check

So, the user wondered why the Internet does not work on the computer. Let's see what diagnostic actions need to be performed initially.

As mentioned above, you should first check the network cable, and not even on your computer, but on another workstation. If you are using an external Wi-Fi device, you should try to plug the cable from it directly into the computer (into the network card connector). In this case, you should pay attention to whether the network indicator is displayed in the system tray. There may be several options: there is no connection, there is a connection to the network, but without access to the Internet, or an unidentified network was found. The last option is more related to a wireless connection.

In any case, to find out why the Internet is not working, you will first have to check some basic parameters and settings.

Driver problems

So, the first thing you need to do is go to the “Device Manager” in the “Control Panel” and look at the status of the network card. If it is marked with a yellow exclamation mark, the problem can be twofold: either the corresponding drivers are installed incorrectly (or not installed at all), or the device has failed for some reason. It’s worth mentioning here that even with minor defects the system can detect the card, but it won’t work.

As is already clear, you need to try to reinstall or update the device drivers. This is done through the properties menu, which has several basic buttons, but it is better to use the original driver disk that came with the purchase of the device. In some cases, a regular update may be required. This is done either from the same menu indicating the source, or manually, for example, from a downloaded distribution. There is no talk now of automatic programs capable of searching for the latest drivers on the Internet - the Internet does not work.

Problems with settings

Now let's see why the Internet does not work if the drivers are installed correctly. It is very likely that the settings are set incorrectly. Let's consider the case of direct connection.

Here you need to check all the parameters and their values that were provided by the provider when connecting. If automatic acquisition of an IP address is not used, the provider settings should be entered in all fields. This is the IP address, subnet mask, gateways, DNS servers, WINS if used, proxies, etc.

In the case of a wireless connection using an external Wi-Fi receiver, the problem may also lie in the settings of the router itself. As is already clear, here you need to check its parameters by connecting it to a computer (the settings are accessed through any Internet browser by entering the value 192.168.1.1 in the address bar in most cases).

It goes without saying that if you use a modem connection, you will have to worry about setting up the modem.

It also happens that the tray icon is indicated by a yellow triangle. This means that there is a connection to the network, but not to the Internet. You can simply try rebooting the system or router. But the problem may also be related to the provider service itself, or even to the fact that the user simply did not pay for the services provided on time.

Why doesn't the Internet work on my phone or tablet?

Now a few words about mobile gadgets. As a rule, most of them have built-in Wi-Fi receivers. The problem here, why the Internet does not work on a phone or tablet, boils down to the fact that the wrong password was entered when connecting. If everything is correct here, it may very well be that the problem, again, lies in the distribution router, and not only in the settings, but also in the weak signal.

It’s another matter when wireless communication is not used, but instead access to the network is carried out through a mobile network. As an example, let’s look at why MTS Internet does not work (however, this also applies to other operators).

In the settings of your mobile gadget, you need to go to the main settings and in the mobile network selection menu, go to the menu, which is most often designated as “APN access point”. Here the appropriate profile is selected (in our case, this is “MTS-Internet”), and the authentication type column is set to “No”. However, you can easily order automatic network access settings from any operator, which will be sent to the corresponding number in the form of a push message.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is worth saying that the question of why the Internet does not work is discussed quite briefly, since in each specific case there can be a lot of reasons why such situations occur. And not just one, but several at once. Therefore, solving this problem must be approached with all seriousness. However, even such simple tips and recommendations will help any user identify the causes of failures and eliminate them using the simplest methods.

The situation when websites do not open on a computer in a browser is quite unpleasant, but sometimes it still happens. With all this, all other programs that require Internet access, for example, Skype or torrent clients, work properly. Don't despair, because solving this problem is not very difficult and will take a little time. There are several alternative solutions to fix the problem:

  • check the settings of the browsers installed on the system;
  • editing the Windows registry;
  • search for malware (viruses and Trojans);
  • fixing the hosts file;
  • Domain Name System (DNS) fix.

First of all, you need to check your computer for viruses. This can be done by any antivirus program. Choosing an antivirus is a matter of taste for each user, so it is difficult to give definite advice. Almost all antiviruses correctly detect the most common viruses and remove them.

After the malicious software has been removed, you need to check whether there is a response from the site or whether the server is truly temporarily unavailable. To do this, you need to run the ping service command with parameters on the command line. The command is typed in the following format:

ping eg ping google.com

If a response is received from the site, then there is an Internet connection but the pages do not load, you need to make some settings.

Windows Registry Fix

To start the registry, run the regedit.exe command. This is done through the menu “Start - Run - regedit”. Next you need to go to the branch HKLM (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE) - Software - Microsoft - Windows NT - Current Virsion - Windows.

Along this path there are several parameters, the one that is interesting to us is called AppInit_DLLs. If the parameter value contains a path to a program or DLL resource, you need to delete it. To do this, call the context menu with the right mouse button on the parameter and select the “Change” item. A window will open in which you need to select the value and save or remember its path, and delete the value itself. After this, close the registry and delete the file along the path that was written in the value line. After rebooting your computer, you can try opening pages.

There are times when the AppInit_DLLs entry is missing from the registry. This is a normal phenomenon; in this case, you just need to look for a solution to the problem in a different way.

Setting up DNS router and computer

In the case when there is an Internet connection but the browsers do not work, and a message appears in the browser stating that it is impossible to convert the DNS address of the server, you just need to enter everything manually. In Windows this is done as follows:

  • through the “Control Panel” you need to open the “Network and Sharing Center”;
  • In the menu on the left side, select “Change adapter settings”;
  • a list of adapters will be displayed in the window that opens. Through which Internet access occurs;
  • the active adapter is selected and its properties are called up;
  • The adapter properties window will be displayed, where you need to click on the “Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” item and click the properties button;
  • Next, set the switch to “Use the following DNS server addresses” and enter 8.8.8.8 as the preferred address, and 8.8.4.4 as the alternative (these are Google server addresses).

After restarting the computer, you must also check the DNS settings of the router. The settings pages for routers are different, but usually the addresses are written on the “Network” or “WAN” tab. If the settings are in automatic mode, then you need to check the box and enter the same server addresses that were previously entered on the computer. After all, the settings are saved and the router is rebooted.

Correcting the Hosts file

This file is used to convert domain names to network IP addresses, and vice versa. The file is located at "%SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" and has no extension. It must be opened as a text file and only with administrator rights. By default it should contain only one entry: 127.0.0.1 localhost. All other lines must be commented out or may be completely absent. During the installation of programs, some of them add their entries to this file, after which problems with the network may arise. If hosts contains other entries, they must be deleted.

You can restore this file in another way - using the AVZ program, which is completely free. It has the ability to restore system parameters. This is done through the menu “File - System Restore” and select the items that need to be restored there. Naturally, it is launched from the system administrator.

There are cases when there is an Internet connection but the Internet does not work, and only some sites do not open, for example, they are blocked at the legislative level, then the solution may be to use VPN servers. There are many offers, both free and paid, and many plugins for various browsers and programs for mobile devices.

These are all the main solutions when pages do not open in the browser, and if nothing helps, then it is best to seek help from professionals or reinstall the system.

Many people are familiar with the situation when you sit down at your computer and discover that your connection to the Internet has been lost. A very undesirable problem, especially if your work directly depends on the Internet.

To fix any problem, you need to find the cause of it.
Why is the Internet connected but not working? There can be many reasons for an Internet outage, both internal and external.

Let's look at the main problems of Internet outages associated with external factors.

What is a provider and what are external reasons

A provider is a company that provides you with Internet access services by connecting your computer to the global network.

All data that you send or receive via the Internet passes through its devices, and the provider is obliged to ensure the transfer of data.

External reasons why the Internet does not work mean that the problem originated outside of your home or the device that replaces it.

In such cases, it is quite rare to correct the situation on your own, as a result of which there is a need to contact the Internet service support service, that is, the provider.

No electricity

The Internet signal reaches your home after traveling quite a long way. On this path there is intermediate equipment that must be connected to electricity.

If the electricity is turned off anywhere along this path, the equipment will turn off and the signal will not pass through. You can't find out about this by just sitting at home. You need to call your provider.

The provider can use its equipment and software to trace the entire chain, find out where the problem is and fix it.

By the way, such breakdowns often occur during a thunderstorm or after a thunderstorm. Lightning protection devices are activated and the power is cut off.

In general, the weather began to deteriorate: strong winds, constant humidity, heavy rains, and especially freezing rains do not in any way contribute to the reliability of Internet connection channels. But they add more work for technical support of providers, and for users they add more dissatisfaction with denials of access to the Internet.

Something broke

On the long journey from the provider to your home, the provider's intermediate equipment may break down. This is not your equipment, it is not in your home, but due to its breakdown, there will be no signal in the house. It is impossible to find out about this while sitting at home. Again, you need to call your provider.

Everything that does not spoil, spoils too - this is what one of Murphy's laws says. Therefore, there is no chance that something in the chain of transmission of Internet signals to your house and apartment may deteriorate. Only the provider's technical support can fix this.

Even the provider’s server, through which all users, or more precisely, all the provider’s clients, gain access to the Internet, can break down. This, however, happens extremely rarely. Servers are becoming more reliable, they are duplicated, backed up, and provide uninterrupted round-the-clock operation. But you can still encounter a similar problem. Fortunately, very rarely.

It broke somewhere

Failures also include broken wires. Well, if a regular wire breaks, it can be “fused” and repaired. But, for example, a fiber optic wire cannot be connected without special equipment, which is not always available even from the provider’s technical support representatives.

Wires may break sooner or later. For different reasons. For example, my friends had a wire coming from the attic into their apartment that fell off from the ceiling where it was lightly attached. The wire fell to the floor, and everyone stepped over it for almost a week. And then everyone got tired of it, and the wire was cut off. I had to call the provider's technical support.

It is practically impossible to splice the wires yourself. Yes, and dangerous. It is possible to confuse signal wires with low and safe voltage with power wires where there is life-threatening voltage. Do not try to repair the break yourself; call technical support.

Other problems on the ISP side

The provider's support service will be able to fix problems such as equipment breakdowns at the provider's premises, or in the attic (entrance) of your apartment building, or restore a damaged wire. And we have already written about this above.

But it is possible that unscheduled work is simply being carried out, about which, of course, you should have been notified in advance, but as usual, they forgot. The provider warns about scheduled or unscheduled work by email. But how often do we check our email? Even if often, did we indicate the right email in the agreement with the Internet provider to communicate with us? Most often, the message to which messages from the provider arrive is rarely opened and almost never read.

And then - it turns out that we were warned that in connection with such and such work there would be no Internet connection in the period from such and such a time and date to such and such a time and date. Forewarned is forearmed. If you do not read such warnings, then suddenly the Internet turns off. The most unpleasant thing is that many users who do not read mail find themselves in a similar situation at the same time. Everyone starts calling the provider at the same time to find out the cause of the problem, but as a result the line becomes overloaded and it can be difficult to get information.

Financial block

It is worth reminding yourself that if your account balance is zero, your Internet connection is automatically blocked. Maybe you just forgot to top up your account? Think about this before you decide to contact support.

A support specialist will usually check your balance status. If you call, he may inform you that there is no Internet access due to a financial block. You need to top up your balance to access the Internet.

Alas, financial blocks can be wrong. The provider may mistakenly withdraw excess money due to, for example, a malfunction of equipment or software related to customer payments. Unfortunately, this also happens, and thus a financial block is automatically activated and the Internet does not work. In this case, you will have to be persistent in communicating with the provider’s technical support, which in turn will prove that you are wrong. In general, it is better that there are no such overlaps.

Problems with the router

If you use to access the Internet, then the simplest option why the Internet does not work is that the router is turned off. It just needs to be connected to electricity.

Sometimes another option helps. Turn off the computer, turn off the router and after a few minutes turn everything back on, it may help.

If the router is faulty, then such a reboot will not help, and the router will need to be replaced. However, it is difficult for an inexperienced user to determine that the reason for the lack of Internet lies precisely in the router. In this case, you have to call a specialist from the company that provides the Internet access service, that is, again from the provider’s technical support.

Problems of mobile Internet users

If you use mobile Internet, then there are no wires going to your house or apartment. You receive a signal from your provider via radio. But this does not mean that there are fewer problems on the provider’s side.

Firstly, so many users can connect simultaneously that the provider does not have enough power.

Then the signal may weaken, or the ability to access the Internet will be completely disabled, since in conditions of overload, mobile operators primarily provide voice mobile communications, and only after that everything else.

Secondly, in the place where you are, the mobile operator may not be able to connect you to the Internet at all.

Unfortunately, this means that this cannot be done in this particular place. It even happens that in one part of the apartment or house there is Internet, but in the other, opposite part - not. We have to, as they say, look for the most suitable place.

Third, You may run out of money in your account, because the Internet access service is paid, as a rule. Also Paid traffic may run out, there is still money, but it is not intended to pay for Internet connections.

Here you need to take care of timely bills, as well as choose suitable tariff options that are convenient for using the Internet access service. Otherwise, you may be left without the Internet, sad as it may be.

It might also be trivial the modem overheats and stops working, which you use to access the Internet. Then you will have to stop the computer and wait until the device cools down. This happens in fast data networks, for example, those operating in the 4G (or LTE) standard.

In general, there can be problems on the mobile Internet, both on the provider’s side and on the user’s side.

Site blocking: some Internet pages do not work

It is possible that you visited a website and saw a message on your computer or smartphone screen: “Access to the resource is blocked.”

Rice. 1 Message on the screen that access to the resource is blocked

In this case, it is better to first close this message and then open another site, for example, Yandex or Google. If other sites open normally, this means that the Internet is working for you. The problem is not that the Internet does not work, but a separate site to which you are denied access.

Access to any site may be blocked by Roskomnadzor or a court. Or the Internet provider accidentally blocked the site by mistake. Below is an example of such a case from my experience.

Communication with the provider about blocking the site

I recently encountered a problem with a site being blocked. I open a page on my website and see a message on the screen that the page is blocked. I was surprised that all pages of my site opened without problems and without any messages, except for one page. I opened a supposedly “blocked” page through another Internet provider, everything works, there is no blocking. What to do in this situation? Why did my Internet provider accidentally block my page?

I wrote a letter with a detailed description of my situation, attached a screenshot (shown in Fig. 1), and sent an e-mail to the support service of my Internet provider. I received this response from them: “Good afternoon, most likely this link, or more precisely, the resource is blocked by Roskomnadzor or Mossud. The solution to the problem is to look in the Roskomnadzor database for why the resource is blocked, and then contact us.”

I had to write to the provider's support service again about the fact that the page was blocked by only one provider. When accessing the Internet through any other provider, the page opens without problems.

After a long and more detailed communication with the provider’s technical support via E-mail correspondence, the problem was solved! And now all pages of the site open without problems.

Internet without problems - is it possible?

Modern data transmission systems, both wired and wireless, are becoming more and more reliable. And this is good, because, in this way, problems with Internet shutdowns become less and less.

It is unlikely that the Internet will ever become completely trouble-free. But now many users do not encounter such problems of lack of Internet, both on the provider’s side and on their computers. Even seemingly non-technical problems, such as financial blockages, are quickly eliminated. Providers offer so-called trust payments and other similar measures to restore normal operation of the Internet even in the absence of money in the user’s account

What to talk about technical things! Here, a lot of equipment is duplicated, servers are redundant, information transmission channels are made along different routes, again to increase reliability. And all this so that Internet access is always available, without interruptions, without weekends, without holidays, without restrictions.

This is the time we live in now. A time when many things are already becoming virtual, and payments, and shopping, and communication, and entertainment, and communication, and training, and development, and innovation, and so on and so forth. And the Internet is the very environment without which all this is no longer imaginable. That is why the requirements for its reliability and fault tolerance are so high.

I would like our Internet to never go down.

Vote

Go to the registry editor. To do this, regardless of what version of Windows you have - XP, 7, 8 or Windows 10, press the Win keys (with the Windows logo) + R and in the “Run” window that appears, enter regedit, then press Enter.

Before us is the registry editor. On the left are folders - registry sections. You should go to the section HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\. On the left you will see a list of parameters and their values. Pay attention to the AppInit_DLLs parameter and if its value is not empty and the path to some .dll file is written there, then reset this value by right-clicking on the parameter and selecting “change value” in the context menu. Then look at the same setting in the same registry subkey, but in HKEY_CURRENT_USER. The same should be done there. After this, restart your computer and try to open any page while connected to the Internet. In 80% of cases the problem is solved.

Malware

Often the reason that sites do not open is the operation of some malicious or potentially unwanted programs. Moreover, given the fact that such programs are often not detected by any antivirus software (after all, they are not a virus in the literal sense of the word), you may not even know about their existence. In this case, special tools for dealing with such things can help you, a list of which you can find in the article. In relation to the situation described in these instructions, I would recommend using the last of the utilities listed in the list; in my experience, it shows itself to be the most effective. After the removal procedure, restart your computer.

Static routes

Go to the command line and enter route -f and press Enter - this will clear the list of static routes and may be a solution to the problem (after restarting the computer). If you previously configured routing to access local resources of your provider or for other purposes, then this process will need to be repeated. As a rule, there is no need to do anything like this.

The first method and all subsequent methods described in the video instructions

The video shows the method described above to correct the situation when sites and pages do not open in browsers, as well as the methods described below. True, the article here talks about how to do all this manually, and in the video - automatically, using the AVZ anti-virus utility.

The notorious hosts file

This option is unlikely if you can’t open a single page in your browser, but it’s still worth a try (Usually editing the hosts is required if the Odnoklassniki and VKontakte sites don’t open). Go to the folder C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and open the hosts file there without any extension. Its default content should look like this: # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.

# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each

# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should

# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.

# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one

# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual

# lines or following the machine name denoted by a "#" symbol.

# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server

# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

DNS failure

If, when you try to open websites, the browser reports the DNS server is not responding or the DNS has failed, then this is most likely the problem. What should be done (these are separate actions, after each of them you can try to go to the desired page):

  • In the properties of your Internet connection, try replacing “obtain DNS server addresses automatically” with the following addresses: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
  • Go to the command line (win+r, type cmd, press Enter) and enter the following command: ipconfig /flushdns

Viruses and left-wing proxies

And one more possible option, which, unfortunately, also occurs quite often. The malware may have made changes to your computer's browser properties (these properties apply to all browsers). Antiviruses do not always save you; you can also try special tools for removing malware, such as.

Resetting the TCP IP protocol

If you have reached this point, but the sites still do not open in the browser, try another option - resetting the Windows TCP IP settings. To do this, launch a command line as Administrator and run two commands in order (enter text, press Enter):

  • netsh winsock reset
  • netsh int ip reset

You may also need to restart your computer after this.

In most cases, one of the listed methods helps. If, nevertheless, you were unable to fix the problem, then first try to remember what software you installed recently, and whether it could affect the Internet settings on your computer, and whether you suspect viruses. If these memories do not help, then perhaps you should call a computer setup specialist.
