Positioning

The Tizen platform did not become an alternative to Android for Samsung, as it was originally intended. Moreover, in 2013, its development was actually stopped, and the only device that was ready was released a year later on the market of India and Bangladesh, where the Samsung Z1 became a budget device that was perceived by the local population as a smartphone, which in the generally accepted view is not what it is. somewhat reminiscent of the Asha series from Nokia. An inexpensive touch phone with an application store, music playback and other goodies that are important for buyers in the low price segment. Samsung did not dare to launch this device in other markets and sacrifice profits from sales of budget Android smartphones. They gradually began to forget about Tizen.

They planned to show the Z1 in Russia, but literally a few days before the announcement this device was canceled and put an end to plans to sell Tizen for the mass market. The second arrival of Tizen in Russia with the Z3 model is aimed at the corporate market, as well as solutions for the state; this is not a device for ordinary consumers.

I will not repeat the main thoughts that are set out in “Sofa Analytics”; it talks about why Tizen has a chance to become an alternative to Android in the corporate segment and what advantages it has. Let me just remind you that in Russia the Samsung Z3 will be available only to corporate clients as part of large projects. It will not be possible to buy this device on the open market, at least not in the near future. Although it has a number of interesting features, which we will talk about in the review.

Design, dimensions, control elements

Externally, we see the usual Samsung; nothing in its appearance betrays a Tizen smartphone. The case is plastic, the side edging looks like metal, but it is also made of plastic. The back cover has a soft-touch coating and is very pleasant in the hand.

The phone is available in two colors, gold and black, I have the device in the second color.

On the left side there is a paired volume key, on the right side there is an on/off button. The top end is a 3.5 mm jack, the bottom end is microUSB. On the front panel you can see a 5-megapixel camera, as well as a proximity sensor. The central key is mechanical, there are touch buttons on the sides - a classic Samsung layout.



Opening the back cover, you will see two slots for microSIM cards, as well as memory cards.


The build quality is excellent; for its price segment, the device looks and feels top five. Dimensions – 141.5 X 69.9 X 7.9 mm, weight – 110 grams. The phone fits very well in the hand.



Display

Budget phones don't use SuperAMOLED panels, but they made an exception for this device. The diagonal is 5 inches, but the resolution is only 1280x720 pixels, 293 ppi. For a product of this class, the screen stands out sharply; in the settings you can select the screen mode and color scheme.

There is an “outdoor” operating mode, when the screen backlight increases and it remains readable. Of the minuses, I note the lack of automatic backlight adjustment. In this case, you can select fonts, their style and size, all the same as in Android.

The screen for a product of this class is outstanding without any discounts; competitors do not have anything even close in terms of characteristics. This is the strong point of the device.

Battery

By modern standards, a 2600 mAh Li-Ion battery is perceived as a typical, not very large battery. If we draw parallels with Android, then a 5-inch device with such a battery will not work for very long, it’s at most one day. But the organization of Tizen is such that in real operating modes the device shows stunning results that are simply impossible to believe, and you have to look at the phone for a long time and ask why it is still working.


So, here are screenshots of the operating time, there is no error on them.

Unfortunately, the utility does not show screen operating time, but in my case it is about 2 hours. In mixed mode, when you use the browser and other functions, you can achieve in practice 3-4 days of full-fledged work with a screen operating time of 7-8 hours. This is simply fantastic.

If you try to watch a video, the maximum playback time is 13 hours, which is slightly more than most Samsung devices, where it averages about 10 hours.

The manufacturer claims that with 10% battery charge you can get up to 33 hours of standby time. And this is without the maximum power saving mode, which turns all images into black and white and is similar to the similar mode on Android for Samsung phones.

Full battery charging time is about 2 hours.

The example of this Tizen smartphone proves that the problem of modern phones is often not in the hardware and the size of the batteries, but in the way the software is written, and a lot can be improved here. Tizen may not have many services that run in the background, but this simplicity results in record operating time. No Android smartphone simply can compete with the Z3 in this regard. This is an amazing runtime, and I always have dual SIM enabled, LTE and scheduled email checks. An amazing result, there are simply no other words.

Performance, chipset, memory and RAM

The model is built on the Snapdragon 410 MSM8916 chipset, quad-core processor, frequency up to 1.2 GHz, Adreno 306 graphics accelerator. A budget solution that cannot be evaluated by analogy with Android, Tizen performance is noticeably higher, and the same interface has almost no lags, it is quite fast, you can see this in the video describing the system.

The memory capacity of 1 GB is also difficult to estimate by analogy with Android; subjectively, this memory is more than enough due to the fact that the volume of programs on Tizen does not exceed 500-600 KB, rarely more than a couple of MB. The performance requirements are completely different, and programs written in HTML5 provide almost instant loading and excellent performance. The system pleasantly surprises, although there is a general lack of grooming; there are often small delays when moving from program to program, but they are felt. Rewinding also slows down when watching a video; there are clearly not enough hardware resources. But, at the end of the day, this is a budget device, and for its class it is excellent.

The built-in memory capacity is 8 GB, you can expand it up to 128 GB (in the video I’m talking about 64 GB, but in practice 128 GB works).

Communication capabilities

A standard set of interfaces, USB 2.0, there is a connection to a PC in Mass Storage mode. There is also BT 4.1, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct. There are no problems connecting wireless headsets, but various sports accessories will not work with the device; there are simply no programs for them (ANT+ is also not supported). Surprisingly, the Z3 can be paired with the Gear S2, which also runs Tizen.

Quite unexpectedly, both SIM cards support LTE Cat.4, which may be added in the future with a firmware update VoLTE, the bands are as follows: 800/850/900/1800/2100/2600.

There is also GPS, Glonass, there are no problems here, Here maps from Nokia are used for navigation. These are the standard choices for Tizen (my sample didn't have them).

Camera
